Back to School: one step forward; Emilio González and Paco Fernandez; azenik

The need for a change..is not unusual...people are looking forward and have a real wish to work in something not only different or more creative, but also in a totally different way: they want to be entrepreneurs...Once accommodated, our life becomes all about postponing...finding an initiative like TetuanValley Startup School has been a key factor in the decision process. When it seemed safe not to move on, here we go again!...this is a world plenty of big dangers and big opportunities but more than ever the input from other start-ups initiatives with young people and fresh ideas is encouraging....Never been back to school was so appealing. We have been pushed to think again. No doubt, we forecast some exciting out coming weeks.

Think BIG, think different; Luis Sánchez and Germán Retamosa; TinkSecurity

One of the biggest advices an entrepreneur can get is just a two words statement: "think BIG". These words aim to motivate yourself beyond your psychological bounds, it's not just a sentence it's more than that it's a way-of-life...Therefore if you can do it, you can do it better, and eventually if you do it better you will succeed, and that's what start-ups are all about...However, thinking big is not enough, and that's a fact when talking about the creation of a start-up...The market is over saturated, each day hundreds of companies are born worldwide and you have to compete with them, and most likely you will lose against them if you don't make things different..."Innovation is the ability to see changes as an opportunity, not a threat".

The 48 hours day
; Abel Muiño; Triptance.com

...I recall saying many times that I do not have time for that before. But the fast pace of the Startup School has forced me to pack more tasks in the same time. How is that possible? Because I had the time. But not the will, or the right priorities...Breaking tasks in small pieces helps into getting in a state of flow where productivity is increased. Even better, finishing a task is rewarding and somewhat liberating since is one less thing you have to do...Do not procrastinate. Do small things and never leave them unfinished...

The best way to predict the future is to invent it; Hector Criado and Fernando Alonso; SolAR

Since 90's, European countries has taken the lead in renewable energies...President Obama's Administration has waken up America, and give a new momentum to R&D in Greentech and renewable energies...The interest about this kind of energy is plausible if we see the list of the 10 Largest Venture Capital Investments in the U.S. in 2008, where we can see that 6 of them were in solar energy startups... Although environmental issues have become more important, the key factor is that solar energy will reach the grid parity on a really short term...And the second best way (to predict the future) is to finance it.

Confidence and Reliability; Emilio González and Paco Fernández; azenik

Everyone knows only a few years ago we were able to live without mobiles and E-mail. Companies had to wait several days to get some files sent by courier. Notebooks, Blackberries, Twitter, blogs, Web 2.0, virtualization tools didn’t exist...In the last years, the Internet and Web 2.0 has been a real revolution. A lot of technology resources are available to everyone. The point is, how to know about them, and how to find the right-useful solution easy and quick....We consider confidence and reliability as key factors both in business and private life...

Zappos: The art of company culture; Antonio Melé; Reutiliza.me

Zappos is a online footwear company that has become a leader by its unique company culture. The way Zappos treats not only their customers but also their employees and vendors it's very inspiring to any startup.... The difference at Zappos is this is not just a list. The core values are really important to all employees and they care for their customers A LOT... The hiring process at Zappos is really important for that: It includes special interviews by the HR department that are only related to culture fit...Zappos is an incredible example of how to create a team of passionate people who give the best of themselves by commiting to the company's core values. This shows us the importance of creating and preserving a unique company culture in which all team members believe.

The pain is... investing in Spain; Manuel Gil and Angela Ramirez; e-assistenzalegale

Spain, a developed country with one largest economies in the world, appears in position 62 in the “Ease of Doing Business” Ranking...Spain will have economic difficulties for a long period of time (beyond 2010), if it is doesn’t make a deep restructure of its economy in terms of budget, expenses and competitiveness among other areas...relevant to Spanish start ups and entrepreneurs?...Today Spain ranks in the position #146 in the “Starting a business indicator”!!...

Pair Programming: No more lone cowboys; Alex Recarey and Tony Martín; Therapeers

I have to admit I was skeptical about pair programing when I first heard about it. Two people, and only one writing code? It seems like a terrible idea to me, cut your productivity in half before you've even started!...part of the problem is the "lone cowboy coder" syndrome...Boy, was I wrong...It's by no means easy. You need to trust and have a good relationship with the person you pair program with, but in a startup, well, you're already married to your partners!... You code faster, you maintain concentration much easier, you code is much better quality, bugs are easier to find and quash...In fact, we've gotten so used to pair programming that when we can't be together we try to use VNC or other means to keep in touch. If that's impossible then I can assure you that you feel the loss...

For the fun of it: William Wallace and Ana María Salas; Torresgate

...We've learned that working creatively as a team is harder than we thought... that a leader is not the best orator, but the best listener...to feel passionate without becoming overwhelmed...we've seen the complexity of other aspects of business, such as creativity, sociability and marketing skills...the key part is to always be open to the advice of the wiser...You must have fun along the way, and surround yourself with intelligent, funky people that will be the ones who make the journey worthwhile...

Love it of leave it: Abel Muiño; Triptance.com

...the passion of an "A Team" in building their product...
startup way of life is very different from running an established business. Startups face new, unexplored problems which need innovative and creative solutions... is the very demanding nature of the adventure. It will have an impact on everyone around...

Real Life in not enough: Hector Criado and Fernando Alonso; solAR

Science fiction is at your fingertips, we are not , teleportation or Scarlet Johansson, but about augmented reality (AR), merging information to the real-world...AR has gone out from R&D labs and universities to our desktops...part of our daily life pretty soon through smartphones and similar handled devices...GPS geo-location, device orientation, image recognition and internet connectivity to get maps, real time-data and other information are some of the features which are approaching the AR to the smartphones. And some European entrepreneurs and companies are into it right now...why don’t apply AR to solar energy...

Because, YES WE CAN innovate: Alex Recarey and Tony Martín; TheraPeers.

Everything that can be invented has been already” - Charles H. Duell, Commissioner of the United States Patent and Trademark Office in 1899...People keep innovating...But not everybody is an innovator...There are always people who “wont get it"...So if you don’t believe in yourself, you’ve already lost. Forget prophets and doom-mongers. The only way to know if something is going to work or not is to try it...

Hyperlocal Startups: Antonio Melé; Reutiliza.me

There are a lot of mainstream web services offering amazing ways to socialize and share information. Every day there are hundreds of new web services and hundreds disappear, but that hardly affects us. Why?...The term "hyperlocal" was coined by the journalism industry to refer to the news coverage of community-level events...treats local topics offering relevant information to the communities living in those locations. Nevertheless, the social web has not achieved that point yet...We need to develop web services related to local needs. There are already some start-ups leading this way...

Are we close to the European Silocon Valley: Manuel Gil and Angela Ramirez; e-assistenzalegale

On October 23, 2007 the European Commission enacted a bill to regulate and encourage legal immigration of skilled workers. It is called the "Blue Card" ... this initiative has found many obstacles to become a reality... this directive as a first step to start what we called here “The European Silicon Valley”, we are far from accomplishing that goal. Member states of the UE have 2 years to adopt this directive... we believe that measures like the Blue Card are in the right direction to active the EU industry but still , it’s important that every single member of the EU makes a fast use of this tool to rebuild a sinking economy.
